How does DoGooDog teach your dog to:

DoGooDog amply rewards the behaviors that we love to see our dogs perform. Praise, petting, play, walks, and treat rewards not only motivate reliable behaviors; they make training fun for both you and your dog. No more drudgery of drill-like training sessions and countless collar "corrections."

DoGooDog does not use violent training methods--i.e., anything that causes physical, emotional, or psychological distress in your dog. We therefore avoid physical punishment, including hitting, slapping, kicking, leash jerking, choking, shocking, scruff shakes and alpha rolls. DoGooDog also teaches you how to apply the principles of learning theory by putting rewards on a schedule and working them into the daily life of you and your dog.

When you train your dog with DoGooDog, you will learn how to "prompt" the behaviors you would like to teach your dog with motivators like toys and treats. Through repetition of these prompts, you will be able to "shape" these behaviors to the form you would like. You can shape a fast response out of a slow one, for example, or a fifteen-minute stay out of a two-second stay, like gradually sculpting a sculpture out of clay.

The primary training tool that DoGooDog uses for this shaping is a clicker, a small hand-held device that makes a cricket-like click when you press it. The clicker helps speed the training process by letting your dog know the exact moment he "gets it right."

While it would be nice to believe that dogs can learn to understand English fluently, in fact English can never be more than a poor second language for your canine pal. The advantage of the clicker is its distinct sound and brevity, easily picked up by dog ears. The result of using a clicker in the training process is that your dog tends to learn what you are trying to teach her faster.
